On Cyberattacks on Charging Stations

Abstract

The share of electric transport in all countries is steadily growing. Charging infrastructure is obviously one of the determining factors for this growth. This infrastructure (its operability) is a critical element for electric cars. And it is this infrastructure that becomes the target of cyberattacks. The main security problem is that when an electric car connects to a charging station, the car and the charging station interact with each other using a network connection. This connection is carried out via the power line of the charging cable. And the modem responsible for this interaction is available as a normal network interface on the charging station controller. Because of this, incorrectly configuring services on the charging station controller (compromising them) can lead to these services being available on the charging cable, which opens up great opportunities for cyberattacks. The desire to ensure convenience and flexibility of the charging process, to a certain extent, conflicts with the need to ensure security. All this has led to more and more examples of cybersecurity issues specifically for charging stations and related infrastructure, which can also be attacked.
